Day 16 – Rigi

Rigi is a mountain on the other side of the lake from Zug (Zugersee). Rigi Kulm, the peak is 1797.5 metres above sea level. We took a rack railway from Goldau to the top. The rack railway was about 5klm and cost us about $100AUD for Chris, Di and Matthew (Sophie travelled for free). As the railway climbed the views became more and more spectacular. We took the railway all the way to the top and views from the top were truly fantastic. Switzerland is picture-postcard beautiful. We had planned to go for a couple of hour walk to a lower railway station but there were too many snow drifts to risk going that way with small children. In any case the kids were having a great time playing in the snow near the top. It was very windy near the top and we had to find some where sheltered to have lunch. We had lunch on the outside of a restaurant protected by the wind and then walked down a well made path to the next station on the descent. There was a lttle playground nearby where the kids played and then we caught the rack railway back down to Goldau. The views from Rigi Kulm are impossible to do justice with a camera. From the top you have 360 degree views of snow covered peaks and looking downwards to small towns interspersed with farmhouses that would easily fit in fairy tales.

After our day in the mountains we enjoyed homemade hamburgers back at Sheridan and Paul’s. Paul returned from Romania where he had been for a work conference and we sat around catching up.
